Sant Boi

The origins of the town of Sant Boi de Llobregat date back to the 4th century BC, when the first traces of Iberian groups were left. Later, from the 2nd Century AD there was a settlement of Roman population, of which some remnants are left, like the thermal baths that still remain in the oldest part of the town, next to the river. Nevertheless, the urban foundations of a permanent settlement were not really established until the 10th century AD.

Placed within the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Sant Boi is one of the major town centres in the Baix Llobregat region, and a key point in the road network south of Barcelona. The municipality of Sant Boi de Llobregat occupies an area of nearly 22 square kilometres, most of which are on the plain area of the Delta, on the right bank of the Llobregat River; another part is on the slopes of the Serralada Litoral (Litoral Range). Today's population is 82,809 inhabitants and this is quite young.

The town spreads over 38% of the surface of the municipality, another 35% is occupied by the rural area and in the same place, we find a dense net of public thoroughfares (roads and railways), which already occupies 6% of our municipality. We also have a rich heritage of preserved areas: in 21% of the municipality we can enjoy a large wooded area, a nice riverside -recently recovered- and a few narrow strips of moist land.

Sant Boi is a clear reference point within the region in the field of social facilities and services, health centres and nursing homes and, at the same time, is known by a long and broad sports tradition, since it has been  the cradle of great sportsmen and famous sports clubs as well.

But if has an identitari shot that it highlights and it means for us him the mental health. Over 150 years of history shared with patients of mental illness, an excellent relationship of our citizens with patients -by which we have fairly deserved the honour title of  “Hospitable Town”-, and a series of advanced  resources in welfare services, education and research established in our town, clearly show that the hub of community mental health would become our reference point in the next decades.

We intend to stop being "the village of the boxes" to become "the city of the mental health" and, in a society in which mental illness is emerging, we undertake to offer these patients and their families a space where the treatment of such pathologies and the research findings release converge, so that we can open a door to hope for many human beings that feel sorrow grow in the most intimate of their lives
